Acupuncture
Julie Tarrant MCSP and Tim Eden MCSP are
qualified to practice acupuncture for pain relief.
Acupuncture is sometimes used in a treatment
session as an adjunct to traditional
physiotherapy techniques to facilitate pain relief
by decreasing muscle spasm.
Physiotherapists have through training in
anatomy, physiology and pathology far exceeding
that of non-medical professionals who practice
acupuncture. Our skills in musculoskeletal
diagnosis and treatment, our ability to provide
advice on self-treatment and our highly regarded
knowledge on prevention makes the
physiotherapist the obvious acupuncture
professional. Our practice is therefore scientific
based, using traditional acupuncture methods.
Vital energy (Qi) flows through a system of twelve
main channels and regulates body functions. Each
channel is called a meridian, and each meridian is
identified with an organ or function. Each meridian
can be mapped on the surface of the body and
specific points can be identified (acupoints).
Needling these points can affect the flow of Qi
(energy). Our physiotherapist also use dry
needling techniques, where the needle is inserted
for a shorter period of time directly into the
muscle group which is in spasm. This too is an
effective way of decreasing muscle spasm and
therefore relieving pain.
